The first step in cloud migration can be daunting, but with the right strategy, and right tools, the process becomes much more manageable. In this blog series, we’ll cover each step of the cloud migration journey from a platform engineer’s perspective, starting with how to lay a solid foundation for success. Let’s hear what Joe Hollings, Lead Cloud and Systems Engineer here at Kabeelah has to say on the subject.

Before starting your cloud migration, it’s critical to define your cloud strategy. As a platform engineer, my role is to ensure that migration aligns with the organization’s overall goals. This means having clear understanding of what the business aims to achieve. Whether it’s improving scalability, reducing costs, or increasing agility.

Next is to perform an audit of the current infrastructure. Assess the applications, services, and data that make up your on-premises environment. Understanding the dependencies between these systems is key to planning a smooth migration.

Finally, not everything should be moved to the cloud immediately. Identify those cloud-ready application workloads or services that will benefit the most from the move. Focus on low-complexity, high-impact areas to begin your migration journey. Use these migrations as a proof of concept for the process. Then move on to more complex workload migrations.

By taking these initial steps, you’ll ensure that your cloud migration is aligned with both technical and business goals, setting a solid foundation for the next phases of the journey.

Keep posted for part two of this blog series where you can understand How to Start Your Cloud Migration as well as Tools and Tactics for Success.
